The project will conduct video-photography training in 3 selected urban poor (UP) communities in Gulu district-Northern Uganda. The Youths trained by citizen media practitioners will document their condition and struggle. Striking photos and videos will be used in online campaigns and exhibits in the communities and supportive institutions. This is to tell the untold stories of the more than one decade of war in Northern Uganda, showing resilience.

Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
Gulu district represents majority of the population in urban centers like Layibi where our project will be implemented. The youths were forced to drop out of the formal school system due to the war. They have missed out on education and are illiterate. Most of them left orphans, disabled. Most of the urban poor are workers or unemployed doing odd jobs to make a living. The youths are engaged in seasonal employment like making burnt bricks.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
Eye catching photos and vivid short videos in Gulu district that capture lives of local residents and the youths. It will tell the story how the community in Gulu district and the youths in particular cope with the long armed conflict in Northern Uganda, how the war affected them and their effort to educate, organize and mobilize support to end the war. Media output will portray youths’ experiences, hardships, losses and victories.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?

THRIVE GULU has established a Trauma Healing and Reflection Center for training youths in Computer, Arts, Film making and Story Telling. training 30 war affected youths in our computer classes, established internet connectivity in our center. working with 05 women groups in economic empowerment; partner with the local government , local council.Contact staff for this project is trained in Film making and Photography.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
We plan to train 30 youths. The participants are either members of the existing local organizations (youth groups/women groups) or individuals who signified their intention to be part of the training. Each participant will be screened and commit to produce photos or videos after the training.
One of our core programme pillar is story telling as one therapy for trauma treatment. This project will only supplement on our efforts.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
More training equipment like video cameras and video editing software.
