Topical focus:
Country:
What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Homa Bay
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
We will be working with youth out of school who live in the informal settlement. Being in small underdeveloped area with limited & inadequate internet connectivity, naivety on computer and the general technology usage, the community lags behind for lack of forum for information dissemination & experience sharing. Especially with the numerous challenges facing the youths economically, socially and politically that has led to their vulnerabilities.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
Use of new technologies in raising awareness on the consequences of discrimination will be a new approach. Participants will find it interesting to make use of mobile phones, video coverage and photography to document and address incidences of discrimination amongst the youths out of school living in the informal settlement. There will be real life experience sharing, short documentaries that will be put on social media for others to replicate.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
Since 2011 as part of our project, we have encourage and enrolled a number of youths to join the forum where we discussed a number of thematic issues affecting the youths in the entire Homa Bay County. We also have links with young professionals and technocrats that assist us with the technical assistance when serving the communities. We also work very closely with the Provincial Administration who has been of great help to us.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
We plan to train an initial 50 youths from the community. With the acquired new knowledge & skills, these youth will then become facilitators & train their peers and the cycle will continue. Plans to ensure sustainability of their participation include giving gifts, certificates and sponsoring the most consistent and dedicated individuals to exchange programs with other groups from other counties.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
To ensure the success of this project, I would like to be supported with at least 1 field laptop computer/Ipad, two desktop computers, 1 multi-user 3G+ broadband modem and a voice recorder and a camcorder, amplifier and speakers. We would also like you to link us with other organizations or people who are using digital technology to address such issues around the globe.
