This project is to transform the fishermen in Oyamo island from traditional inadequate ways of communication by training them in computer and internet usage.
The project is to enhance these fishermen global participation in environmental issues especially water and marine conservation. They will have a voice in global major environmental forums organized by UNEP and other stakeholders, something they are not even aware of currently.
What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
The participants will share daily news and stories on their social and economic lives, take photos of their daily activities and upload them online on their official pages on social sites like TiG and Matador Networks, write and post articles on their individual experiences in the Island; additionally, they will be assisted by professionals to make a documentary of the Oyamo Island and share it with the world online and during global forum.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
There exists a good working relationship between my organization and the community living in Oyamo Island on environmental conservation and future plans on opening up the Island as a tourist centre due to its historical position to Kenya and East Africa. 2013 world environment day will see my organization plant trees on the Island to celebrate the day.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
1000 fishermen will be trained and the training will be conducted in the Island during off fishing hours especially at 2pm when majority of the fishermen are done with their daily fishing activities and retire to rest or idle around due to lack of recreational activities. With the collaboration of the Island Beach Chairman and government agencies the sustainability of the participants is guaranteed.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
The project will require at least 20 additional computers, 5 internet modems, and 1 digital camera. The computers will be very essential during computer classes while the camera will be a daily helpful friend in capturing project photos. Due to lack of internet in the Island, the modems will be used to access the world through the internet.
