This project will promote use of local talent to address topical issues through youth trainings on how to use digital technology, social media, visual & performing arts to voice their views & opinions by use of photos, stories & short video documentaries. The project will create awareness on topical issues, promote skill & talent diversity, build the youth’s capacity as resource persons & ultimately create positive social change in the community.

What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?

Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
We will mainly be working with youth out of school. Being in a rural area with limited & inadequate internet connectivity, naivety on computer usage, the village lags behind since there is no forum for information dissemination & experience sharing. Moreover with the myriad of challenges facing youths many questions are left unanswered since they are restricted to talk/speak out in the community due to taboo issues & lack of a forum for sharing.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
The content will revolve around facts on topical issues being addressed, demystifying myths and correcting misconceptions. There will be real life experience sharing, short videos/documentaries that will be put on facebook, twitter and YouTube for other people to from and see if they can replicate the same ideas to serve their communities.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
We have already started theatre for development (TFD) short skits, songs & dances and poems on different topical issues that will be used for video recording, editing and posting online. Equally we have been able to link with the Ministry of Youth & Sports Affairs (MOYAS) and got goodwill of provision of training space for the participants.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
We plan to train an initial 60 youths from the community. With the acquired new knowledge & skills, these youth will then become facilitators & train their peers and the cycle will continue. Plans to ensure sustainability of their participation include giving gifts, certificates and sponsoring the most consistent and dedicated persons to exchange programs with other groups.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
To ensure the success of this project, I would like to be supported with at least 1field laptop computer, two desktop computers, 1 multi-user 3G+ broadband modem and a voice recorder and a camcorder. We would also like you to link us with other organizations or people who are using digital technology to address issues around the globe.
