South Africa: The OSCAR Youth Voices of KwaZulu Natal
The OSCAR Project seeks to teach the disadvantaged and underprivileged youth of KwaZulu Natal in South Africa how to use the digital photography and video to document life, telling stories and events.
The project will unlock learning, unlock further knowledge and skills. The OSCAR Youth Voices of KwaZulu Natal will create opportunity, release potential and youth will achieve excellence.
What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
The target group will be youth from the city of Pietermaritzburg and Surrounding areas. Most of the Youth never use the digital photography or video camera as youth are coming from the most disadvantaged and underprivileged communities due to poverty or HIV and AIDS.
We are living in an era when the ability to use digital photography and video with understanding and enjoyment is more important than at any other time in our history.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
The project will give youth a voice through use of digital photography and video. The current affairs will be the focus; youth will be using the digital to express themselves. Education, poverty, HIV and AIDS, Climate Change, environmental issues, access to basic rights will be the focus news and stories which the youth will be creating and documenting using the photography and video.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
The OSCAR Project is a non-profit organisation which was set up since 2007. Its offers school, family and community based approach to meeting the complex needs and challenges faced by different groups of beneficiaries in Pietermaritzburg.
OSCAR Project continues to advance its mission of serving the disadvantaged. We have seen many lives changed for the better. The youth was been our target and will continue to reach out to them.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
We are seeking to train 1540 youth. The training will help to develop skills in effective use of digital photography camera and video, ICT and new media. Access to digital video holds the key to the empowerment of marginalized youth. Promoting knowledge and skills through learning and the effective use of technology. Fostering wealth creation, reduce unemployment and create self-sustaining communities by providing them with technology tools.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
To connect us with other organisation for the network and learning from each other by exchanging data, results and learning experience.
