This is a project of Kenya Sustainable Health Aid (KESHA) working in Tana County in Kenya. The project will create a group page in the facebook social media i.e TANA RIVER CIVIC EDUCATION NETWORK. The project will training the youth on how to use internet mobile phones to the use the web page and invite many youth to the page. The page will be updating the members with information about governance and democracy issues affecting Tana County. Majority of them owns phones hence this project will improve their participation in governance and democracy, and hold their leaders accountable.

Describe the specific population with whom you will be working.
Tana county is one of the poorest and marginalized county in Kenya in terms of developments, education, computer infrastructure e.t.c. The youth constitute 65% of the total population of 240,000. Majority of the population cannot use computers because they are not available but they own mobile phones. A study conducted by KESHA showed that their is average of 1 mobile phone per household, and all youth can use the internet from a phone.
During the study where KESHA is setting up a community FM radio station the youth also proposed the use of the social/citizen media.

What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
The vision is improved socio-economy and health of the youth of Tana County. The participants will understand issues of governance and democracy, their roles in citizen participation.
The output will includes youth participation in democratic processes, youth vying for elective positions, follow-up of projects being implemented with public funds to ensure accountability and quality of work, prevention of HIV/AIDS, Malaria and TB, information about quality education e.t.c

KESHA is implementing APHIA plus Imarisha -HIV/AIDS, funded by USAID, Community TB activities funded by Global fund TB round 9, and setting up a community FM radio. All these activities involve youth in school and youth out of school in implementation. The groups includes;-Laza sand, Kuphana, tumbuguni, KWEHU GWANONI-(facebook),
How many participants do you think will be trained in your project?
The project will train 80 participants and will target youth out of school from the 3 sub-counties of Tana County. There will be a one day training in each of the sub-counties. The project will work with the area chiefs to identify the youth to participate in the project. The participant should be owning mobile phones and will be trained on how to use the page and what is expected from them. They will also be expected to educate other youth on the project and invite many you to join the page.
Describe which technologies, tools, and media you will focus on when training participants.
KESHA has an office at Hola- the Tana county headquarter. The office has 4 computers and internet connection. All the staffs have done courses in computer applications and will participate in the project.
The participants will be trained on how to use the mobile phone to enter the internet, support in creating face book account, and how to enter in the group page. A power point presentation will be used together with a practical session.
The participants will also be trained that the page will be controlled from the KESHA office and no abusive language to the page.
Describe the facilities where you will hold the workshops.
The facility to be used are:-
1. Bura county club in Tana North sub-county,2. Laza leisure in Tana River sub-county, 3. Caritas in Tana Delta sub-county
A projector for power point presentation, 2 computers, USB modem and phones will be used.
What is your current relationship with the community with whom you plan to work? What makes you the most appropriate individual or organization to implement this project?
KESHA is a community organization working in Tana River county since 2006 and was registered with the ministry of gender and social services in 2008. Since then the organization has implemented several community projects. The organization has a network of 72 civicil society of which many are youth groups. Some of the activities and donors includes;- APHIA plus Imarisha -HIV/AIDS, funded by USAID, Community TB activities funded by Global fund TB round 9, and setting up a community FM radio. The organization has been working with youth in school and youth out of school.
What specific challenges do you expect to face when planning and implementing your project?
1. Vastness of the county- training will be done at the sub-county level to minimize transport cost of participants.
2. Lack of computers and electricity- The KESHA computers will be used by the project to manage the page while members will use their mobile phones to access the internet.
How will you measure and evaluate the project’s impact, specifically: your primary participants, the wider regional community, or the global digital community?
1. Will carry out pre and post test evaluations during the trainings to gauge participants knowledge on the use of phone internet and facebook.
2. Number of youth registered as members in the group.
3. Involvement and participation of youth in issues of governance and democracy.
