Rising Voices is a partner of the United Nations’ International Year of Indigenous Languages 2019. To commemorate this campaign, we are collaborating with our friends that are part of Latin American networks of indigenous language digital activists to organize a social media campaign to amplify their work and highlight their personal stories.
Every Monday beginning on January 14, a different digital activist will manage the @ActLenguas (Language Activism) Twitter account to share insights about the importance of language and culture for them and for their communities. You may also read about motivations, challenges, and success stories related to this language digital activism. Each Twitter “host” will share something different and unique to their own personal experiences.
For the next 50 weeks, followers of the @ActLenguas account will learn about these important perspectives from Aymara activists in El Alto, Bolivia, Mapuche activists from Chile, Zapotec activists from Mexico, and from other parts of Latin America.
Please see the schedule below for those who have signed up to share their own stories. We hope to have short profile blog posts on each “host”.
This social media project was inspired by similar initiatives such as @IndigenousX in Australia and Global Voices community Instagram rotation. You can support this campaign by following the @ActLenguas Twitter account and by retweeting message you find inspiring or interesting. Hosts are also eager to receive feedback in the form of messages of encouragement or questions about their work.
