D. R. of Congo: Muzuka Online

  February 26, 2013

This 2 year strategic initiative aims to make digital access available in the DR Congo’s Muzuka sector (9 villages), where accessing digital information remains a big challenge as well as in other rural areas in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This project will provide 10 Smart phones, solar charging kit and train community leaders about researching and sharing information through the use of ICTs.

Uganda: Mukenkedde Women’s Forum

Women in Busoga, Uganda’s poorest region, form groups of 30-40 members known as Mukenkedde (beloved friend). They visit one member per fortnight, donating “prizes” including mugs, clothes and some cash to the host. Most resources, though, are spent on feasting and entertainment. The proposed project aims at mobilizing the women to use the scarce resources for development activities, not feasting and entertainment, so as to raise household income.

Indonesia: From Disable for Disable Project

This project has two main stages: 1) Providing people with disabilities to use citizen media and enabling them to conduct training to transfer this skill to their peers. 2) Delivering citizen media training from and for people with disability. It gives opportunity to those who were participating in the first stage to exercise their skills and produce an advocacy video to reach policy makers and those who will compete in the 2014 election.

Cambodia: Rights for Renters

Poor individuals and families renting accommodation in Phnom Penh document their lives using digital media. Although amongst the poorest city dwellers, renters are currently excluded from policy initiatives directed at the urban poor. This project aims to both document the lives of renters, as well as show how important they are for the city. Project outputs: narratives, photos, video, blog, exhibition as part of the annual Our City Festival.

Bangladesh: Get Involved, Be Informed, Make a Chnange

This will be a yearlong project mentoring a group of young volunteers with an aim to build an expert group of young people for working human rights and environmental sustainability field through them contribution to the local community. Participants will work within the local community on various issues through, interviewing them, writing, blogging, photography, making short movie etc so that they can gather knowledge to share.

Uganda: Citizens Voices

Citizens Voices Teaching local residents to record and edit audio recordings on Audacity for a community podcast that can be uploaded online, as well as distributed to local radio stations for a wider reach. As a response to mounting concerns over poor service delivery, low productivity of public investments; escalating corruption in Amuria District, Eastern Ugand; the need for community ‘watch dog’ initiatives to enhance solidarity.

Kenya: Silent no More

Kenyan Internet users increased by 95.63 % in the last one year showing a tremendous growth in the country’s technology fueled by high number of mobile phone usage. This creates an ideal avenue for Kenyan Youth to engage in Digital conversations around emerging issues and use of technology to address those issues. Silent no More will create 100 man strong network that will create compelling conversations on how technology can transform lives.

Uganda: Youth Connections for Development

We aim to train over 120 youth and children in computer literacy so that they can be exposed to the outside world as its said the world is ‘a global village’. By training the youth in computer applications we will cover some missing gaps in the education sector. We intend to promote positive cultural practices and good morals for economic development. The greatest population here are computer illiterates and 80% are youth.

Uganda: Telling our Agriculture Success

Maganjo Farmers Association (MAFA) works with rural farming communities in Luwero District. Through this project, MAFA would like the farmers to get an avenue through which to communicate on how they manage to increase farm production and household incomes to reduce on poverty cycle. We will capture the work of these farmers through photography and create an online gallery which we want to act as an inspiration to digital media world.
