Kenya: The Slum Voices

Whenever you come across a story about slums in Kenya’s mainstream media, it will most probably be negative; relating to crime, fire, drugs, prostitution, floods etc. This coverage paints a negative image of the slums and the residents. The Slum Voices is a citizen journalism program aimed at telling the world the positive stories from slums by the residents themselves through videos and pictures taken using their mobile phone cameras. The program targets all slum communities and will equip interested residents with basic journalism skills to help them tell their stories.

Kenya: ACDM Community Journalists’ Training Programme

Africa Community Development Media (ACDM) proposes the launch of “ACDM Community Journalists’ Training Programme” – a training program that will further implement the organization’s mission of actualizing the power of communities through community and social media. The “programme”,to be conducted at our offices, will serve as a platform to train Community Journalists on how to manage social media and blogs for their respective organizations. From a theoretical perspective, key ethical challenges for online journalists will be addressed, including: Accuracy, Transparency, Value Addition, Corrections and dealing with Trolls.

Kenya: Click the World

Young people are full of optimism and they easily take advantage of opportunities and information that are availed to them.The challenge remains finding avenues where they can access such platforms. GHETTO POTENTIAL TRUST KENYA works to create a four day seminar dubbed Click the World, a concept that brings together thirty five young people from seven slums within Nairobi. The emphasis of this project is to expose the positive side of informal settlements. The youth will be introduced to simple writing skills and online reporting.

Kenya: Campus for Transparency

Campus youth are also adversely affected by a lack of transparency but they have few avenues of talking about it, and the project aims to identify champions of transparency:give them a platform to add their voice through citizen journalism/media.“Campus” students will have an opportunity to increase their awareness on corruption risks, corrective actions and milestones/success stories and also influence others by collecting and sharing human interest stories of how corruption has affected the society and above all tell positive stories that will trigger social behaviour change.

Kenya: Online Election

Do develop a smartphone application which will be used in online voting or carrying out various surveys for research purposes.The application will be developed in windows and Androids.This application will be of great use in most developing countries and the globe at large.Voting in elections and electionering process is a big huddle. If it can be sorted out with applications which runs in web base then it will be a solution for the world wide web users and the world at large.

The bicycle taxi business popularly known as boda boda is a major source of livelihood for most households in Western Kenya. With an estimated 400,000 men relying on the bicycle for their daily income, there are many untold success stories and challenges behind the bicycle taxi business.Feeding the families,paying school fees and medical fees for family members,constructing good houses,raising capital for other businesses,keeping fit and protecting the environment are some of the stories.The project aims at bringing out these stories behind the bicycle taxi.

‘INGOOMA’ basically means ‘drum’ in the Maragoli accent of western Kenya. In the days past, a large ‘ingooma’ was placed into the Maragoli hills, that was used to communicative important information to the community .It was the focus of the entire community, and they relied on its boom to know how the situation was in the community and what to do in different situations. This project intends to use citizen media as a modern day ingooma, to share and impart important information among young people of the Maragoli community, as a way of empowering and providing exposure to technology.

Kenya: e-Agriculture Community Domain Project

A number of youths have failed to secure formal employment and hence resorted to small scale farming. However, they are yet to break through the market ceiling due to lack of information on various platforms available to market their produce. Therefore, this project will be a blessing in time to the young farmers. Being knowledgeable on the social channels they can exploit in increasing their agricultural productivity will reduce household poverty levels. Currently, rural poverty stands at 47 per cent.We will meet them in the villages.

Kenya: Girl Power Clubs Africa Community Connect

Girl Power Clubs Africa (http://girlpowerclubs.blogspot.com) is a women leadership program that trains teenage girls to become agents of positive change through sport, culture, art and dance. New clubs were recently launched in rural Siaya County, which also has amongst the highest rates of poverty, child mortality, early marriage and pregnancies in Kenya. The aim of the project is to give girls a voice, to enable them to begin to pinpoint issues that affect their lives and seek help through providing a communication system between the clubs and the Girl Power headquarters and change agents.

This Sky FM/Witaba Foundation project seeks the promotion of Citizen Journalism through the use of new media tools among youth and women aged 18-35. We hope to empower underrepresented voices through digital media and citizen journalism by providing an online platform to share stories, and raise awareness about issues that are often overlooked by mainstream media and matter most to underserved communities.
