Kenya: Africa Stories Project
Kenya has over 40 tribes that make a rich and diverse culture. Each of these have distinctive rich stories that have been passed on from generation to generation around fireplaces in the rural areas. These stories were used to teach morals, etiquette, and other social norms, to preserve traditions, and to act as oral historic records of family migrations, significant occurrences and so on.Since most of these stories were passed on orally, there are very few written or recorded accounts in existence. We therefore want to capture these stories and preserve a large knowledgebase of our stories.
Nigeria: Acting to Keep Children Safe and Alive
The project theme ‘Acting to Keep Children Safe and Alive’ illustrates the need for proactive as well as preemptive steps to keep children safe and help increase their chances of survival in their infancy stage and beyond. This project is aimed at empowering people to take action in improving their own health and the health of their family at home, starting at birth. It also gives the public and participants an opportunity to empower or guide people through policy and technology changes, as well as introduce them to new health and safety options as they become available in a community context.
Cameroon: Climate Change Messenger
The project Climate Change Messenger is a community based initiative that seeks to empower youth leaders in digital environment activism and human rights related issues. 25 youth leaders shall be empowered on blogging and blogs set up for them to publish environment related stories to create awareness. They will also be empowered on how to create messages on the effects of plastic bags which shall be published in the blog “Climate Messenger” to create awareness. It will stimulate more youths to get involved in environmental protection and the mitigation of climate change at community levels.
Zimbabwe: She Says
The project aims at teaching rural women to use the internet to write about themselves in their own language, and to facilitate their participation in national , politics, economic and social issues.25 women will be trained on blogging, using wordpress, facebook and twitter. They will inturn train other women in their respective projects, or groups. Trainees will then create bloggs suitable for their own intrests, through which they will be able to tell their own stories. By this they will get recognition from other women in influential positions, and also learn what other women are doing.
Kenya: Africa Stories Project
This is a project that aims to bring back to life oral narratives and folk tales as told to us by older generations by archiving and sharing them via an online platform for current and future generations to learn from. We shall carry out this project in three ways: we shall venture out to the communities to collect stories first hand, in their raw form as still told at the village setting by people still in touch and practising their culture. We also intend to crowdsource stories on our web platform from our readers and lastly we intend to write our articles that cover historical happenings.
Uganda: Citizen Journalism Training for Deaf Youth
Sawa World will train 10 youth with hearing impairment in videography and community leadership with our popular training called Citizen Journalism and Community Entrepreneurship. The youth from the largest slums in Kampala, Bwaise, Kamwokya and Rubaga, will learn how to use photography and videography to document successful, locally-created and practical solutions to self-employment and improved livelihoods.
Uganda: Citizen Journalism and Community Entrepreneurship Training for Deaf Youth
Uganda has the highest rate of youth in the world. 77% are between the ages of 15 and 24 years. However, 83% are unemployed due to the lack of vocational skills and youth with disability face the toughest challenges. We will train 10 youth with hearing impairment in videography and community leadership with our popular training called Citizen Journalism and Community Entrepreneurship. They will learn how to use photography and videography to document successful and practical solutions to self-employment and share them with other disabled youth for inspiration and instant replication.
Nigeria: Sustainable Colony
The Ago Ireti community in Ondo state remains the only functional leprasorium in southwest Nigeria but the inmates depend on the stipends they get from Ondo state government for survival. A visit by my organization discovered that the inmates are skilled in on trade or the other but with no or low patronage by the public for fear of being infected. This project aims at training the about 20 inmates on how to use social media to market their goods and services and to make them less dependent on government. They will learn how to use mobile for phones for blogging
Kenya: Radio Taluma Community Journalism Training
We envision community radio journalism training in HomaBay County. The outsourced programs are expected to promote increased participation of communities in the democratic process of the County by providing forums through which communities can ‘freely’ communicate between themselves and their leaders about development issues without interference or fear of intimidation. We intend to setup a studio whereby we shall train 21 community members from 3 pilot districts on community journalism, local content outsourcing and sharing of the content via organized online listeners clubs.
Benin: Ganvié – Living Conditions Exposed
Most people who visit Ganvié are tourists who come to see the Toffin people's unique way of life. The precarious living conditions of the inhabitants, however, never make the news. The project will equip selected secondary school students with the skills to produce a blog on www.rjcebenin.net that will shed light on their living conditions.The student journalists will expose the lack of basic infrastructure, clean drinking water, and sanitation services available. Over the three days of hands-on training,they will learn basic journalistic writing, photography, and social media skills.
